The first ever offshore wind farm has been built in the United States and is located 3.3 nautical miles off the south east side of Block Island, Rhode Island. The 30 megawatt project was developed by Deepwater Wind  as a reliable and renewable source of clean energy replacing the diesel-fueled generators that had previously powered the island.  The five turbines are capable of providing electricity to about 17,000 homes and producing 125,000 megawatts annually. They officially began delivering power on December 12, 2016.

Each turbine stands 600 feet tall from the base to the tip of the blade which is almost twice the height of The Statue of Liberty. The blades alone are 27 tons and 241 feet long and to give you a comparison the Block Island Ferry is 208 feet. The generators inside the turbine are about the size of a school bus. They are capable of withstanding a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 111-129mph.

They are a site to be seen!.
